Helen Williams is the first African American super model who single handedly helped pave the way for all models of color! Although working exclusively for Ebony and Jet Magazine, all non white models were excluded from mainstream fashion! In 1960 Williams moved to Paris where she found success modeling for famous fashion houses such as Christian Dior and Jean Dessès. Williams received three marriage proposals from her French admirers, one of whom kissed her feet and murmured “I worship the ground you walk on mademoiselle”. Not only has Williams broken barriers for models of color, but people of color in fashion everywhere.
